Research Use Common Network

Guide to the research use common network on the Shinanomachi Campus

The Shinanomachi Campus Research Use Common Network (below, “Common Network”) is a network built, managed, and operated by the Shinanomachi KIC so that members of the faculty (researchers) who belong to organizations (courses, centers, etc.) that have not built their own sub-networks can use the Internet through the campus network.

At Keio University, sub-networks are generally constructed and managed in faculty or discipline units, but the Faculty of Medicine has not built a sub-network as a faculty, and people who below to an organization that has not built a course or center sub-network, basically, cannot use the Campus Network or Internet. The Common Network is operated as a complementary and substitute measure to deal with this problem.

Using the Common Network

The Common Network is a network for joint use by faculty members (researchers) who below to multiple organization of Keio University on the Shinanomachi Campus.

Therefore, its use is restricted as follows.

  • Connection requests can be made only by full-time faculty members.
    • A person who cannot make a request can be allowed to use a machine under the responsibility of a person who has made a request, and who is a full-time faculty member.
  • Use is limited to research and educational purposes at Keio University.
    • Use of the service for profit-making purposes including part-time jobs or academic association business, is prohibited.
    • The Common Network is basically an open network.Placing medical care (diagnosis / treatment) data etc. on a machine connected to an open network is very dangerous and is prohibited by the Faculty of Medicine.
  • When using the Common Network, the person who requested its use are asked to take responsibility to be extremely careful concerning security.
    • Use it after mastering methods of using computers and networks.
    • Use it in compliance with the law, regulations and conventions etc.
    • Be sure to always install virus protection software. The Shinanomachi KIC bears no liability for loss of data as a result of virus infection.
    • External liability for illegal actions or discharge of research data or personal information using the Common Network is borne completely by the person who made the request or the person in charge of the organization.
  • Using file-sharing software is forbidden.
    • If the use of file-sharing software has been confirmed, until its use has stopped or it is confirmed that the software has been un-installed, connecting your computer to the common network may be forbidden or use of an information outlet may be stopped.
  • Using a machine connected to the Common Network as a server is prohibited.
    • On the Common Network, because of its relationship with the problem of maintaining network bandwidth, with ensuring security, and with scalability, connecting a server machine (all including file server, mail server, Web server etc.) and operating a server program are prohibited.
    • Similarly connecting a wireless LAN machine or broadband router is also prohibited. This includes Apple’s Time Capsule.
    • When you have to connect a server to the network for research or educational purposes, please build and shift over to a sub-network for your organization. If you are considering shifting to a sub-network, please contact the Shinanomachi KIC.
  • Connecting a network printer is the responsibility of the person who requested the connection.
    • A network printer is considered to be a kind of server and basically its premise is that it will be used on a small and adequately reliable network, so in principle, connection on the Common Network is prohibited.
    • When a network printer must connect for research or educational use, the party who requested the connection must take responsibility for its use and observe the following precautions. In this case please be sure to always request its connection.
      • There is a danger it will be output from users in other organizations.
      • When a printer can be set on the network, there is a danger of another user changing the setting. (In a case where the printer settings cannot include a password)
      • The printer setting method differs according to the manufacturer and type of machine, so the help desk cannot assist you with this matter. Inquire with the manufacturer.
  • When stopping using a requested machine, or when you want to replace the machine you are using, be sure to submit the necessary request form.
    • When you stop using the machine, submit a request to terminate connection.
(Please cooperate in order that limited IP addresses are used effectively.)
    • To change the machine you use, please request that the connection to the existing machine be terminated and request a connection to a new machine.
  • The only usable protocol is IP.
  • ※There are many segments, and these may be changed.
    • The Common Network is divided internally into multiple segments (networks) in order to ensure communication capacity and reduce unnecessary communications.
    • There is, therefore, a different segment for each information outlet, even in the same floor of the same building for more convenient network building.
    • Even during use, you may have to change the network setting. In this case, if the setting of the machine is not changed, you will no longer be able to use the network.
  • Packet filtering (security measure) is done with a router (network control device).
    • In order to prevent illegal communications from the outside from occurring, packet filtering is done.
(For details, see “About packet filtering”below.)

※If you do not take these precautions, you may be refused connection or your connection may be terminated.

About packet filtering

The Shinanomachi Campus Research Use Common Network has taken the following security measures based on packet filtering on its router (network control device) in order to prevent illegal communications from outside the network.

  • Setting contents
The router performs the following packet filtering on communications to each segment.
    • Blocks communications related to file-sharing software
    • ICMP communications blocks broadcast communications from outside.
    • Blocks TCP communications from outside the segment.
    • There is no restriction on communication of return of TCP communication from inside to outside a segment.
(Same applies to data transmission from outside of ftp)
    • UDP blocks communications other than return of domain (port:53), ntp (port:123).
